Boys - Les Beatles* - N°1 (Vinyl, LP, Album)

The next Jamaican vocal duo to reach comparable artistic heights was the Congos a decade later. One of the unusual — and creatively productive — features of Brazilian music in the s was the collegiate relationship existing between its leading singer-songwriters. The album is as inventive and off the wall as the Sgt.

Pepper-ish sleeve suggests. Mahal is not in the business of reproducing his influences; he is intent on combining them into something new. The Equals are unsung heroes of British rock and soul.

Guyanese-born Eddy Grant founded the group — three black guys and two white guys — in , when race relations in mainstream Britain could be really ugly at the start of , employers were still legally entitled to refuse job applications on the grounds of race. The saxophonist, also heard on organ, is accompanied by an electric rhythm section, two percussionists and four horns.

Psych-pop before the arrival of the term. With a ukulele, falsetto vocals and a repertoire centred on the antique backwaters of Tin Pan Alley, Tiny Tim began his career in demi-monde gay and lesbian clubs in New York. He might have stayed there if producer Richard Perry — who the previous year had recorded another first album by another one-off, Captain Beefheart — had not stumbled across him.

Certainly, there are occasional resonances with the Velvet Underground on Monster Movie. Championed by artists as diverse as Frank Zappa, Igor Stravinsky, Janis Joplin and Philip Glass, the composer and multi-instrumentalist worked as a street busker in New York for most of his life.

A modest commercial success, and an unqualified artistic triumph, this first-of-two Columbia albums featured Moondog fronting a piece orchestra. So this album is doubly welcome. Listeners of a nervous disposition may prefer to play the album in a well-lit room.

Although Leo Kottke is primarily a guitarist rather than a singer, he emerged from the same s folk-music movement which produced Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie and their many associates. Kottke is among the most adventurous and technically accomplished guitarist thrown up by the movement.

One of the handful of players to match his skills, and inventive modern spin on roots music, was John Fahey, for whose Takoma label Kottke made this debut studio album. All but one of the pieces are instrumentals based on traditional song structures. It will rip out your heart — in a good way.

Singer El Camaron De La Isla was an archetypal hard-living flamencoist, a user of heroin and cocaine in quantities that would have done Charlie Parker proud, who died aged only Guitarist Paco De Lucia was more disciplined and lived longer. The two men recorded 10, potent albums together. This is their first, officially untitled and identified by its opening track. An Electric Storm was conceived as an accessible exercise in avant-garde electronics.

The album was not the commercial success Island hoped for, but it is an unqualified creative triumph, a unique blend of pretty vocals, faux strings, industrial noise, mutant doo-wop and exotica, and ground-breaking tape manipulation. The Beatles as a sonic template for a mid-century musical journey.

Sold Out. Wayne Hancock. The Flat Five. Devil in a Woodpile. Various Artists. The Pine Valley Cosmonauts. Reviews began appearing in college papers and music publications such as "Rolling Stone". By year's end, a limited run of KUM BACKs were pressed - the song order was changed from the acetate itself and the quality left a bit to be desired as did the packaging.

Nonetheless, the release created quite a buzz and the first knock-off was also available by December. A more polished line-up, compiled by Glyn on 28 May 69, also escaped and was broadcast in the fall. A different take of "Let It Be" was used, and the material was edited and rearranged somewhat. Bootlegs offering a mix of songs from both lineups appeared late this year and on into the next. But none of this was unreleased, just uncommon.

All issues prior to May, had to invent titles for the songs which hadn't been officially issued yet. More interesting material surfaced this year with the discovery of two complete Beatles concerts from their US tour. Neither were correctly identified by bootleggers as far as their sources but both were intriguing and of surprisingly good sound quality. The first was their Hollywood Bowl concert, copied directly from an acetate of Capitol Records' master mixdown in Los Angeles.

But it clearly wasn't the only live recording, for soon a copy of their Philadelphia show with the same setlist appeared. Only this time, rather than claiming this to be a concert from a different city, the bewildered bootlegger made up a location - Whiskey Flats said to be in Georgia, maybe near, say, Atlanta? The source was actually a reel-to-reel recording from a local radio station's simulcast of the show way back in In any case, it was clearly taped directly from a speaker and lacked fidelity.

The final important batch of recordings to surface this year covered yet another aspect of their career - sessions for BBC Radio. Yet again, they were advertised by those who didn't know better and likely a few who did as being studio outtakes.

Once it was established these were not outtakes, they were thought to be from a single Nov 62 BBC broadcast for a while. But if we reverse sides A and B, we find the songs to be chronological highlights from the "Pop Go The Beatles" series from July-Sep 63 in poor quality. This tape probably comes from a British fan who only taped the songs not available on record "Slow Down" didn't come out until 64 with a home recorder.

TMOQ made their first big impression on the Beatles boot market this year by offering some new material. More intriguing was yet another Beatles show, again from a local radio station's broadcast tapes.

The prize here though was the clean tape of the whole show during which John and Paul were in a great mood despite several interruptions due to the unruly crowd.
