This is a fine album from a band that shows astonishing promise. Will the promise be fulfilled? Who knows? But isn't it part of the fun to see? Criticisms of lack of cohesion within the album are unfair, I think. Why must an album have a musical theme or cohesion?

Why is versatility and experimentation within many different styles a fault? There are worse influences to "quote" from musically. Comparing so-called imitators, this band shows far more songwriting promise than, say, Oasis ever did. Lenny Kravitz. I love The Beatles and own every album, but The Beatles initial recordings contained some less than stellar material. Even The Beatles needed time to grow.

The title track has yet to be performed live. In June , it was announced that Highly Evolved was to be reissued on vinyl to coincide with its 15th anniversary. The shows marked Matthews' first with The Vines in 14 years, and the first in seven years for Griffiths and Rosser.

It features the same line-up as Wicked Nature. Unlike many other pop post-modernists, the Vines never sound weighed down by all the influences they include in their music—it's as if they're so excited by everything they hear, they can't help but recombine it in unique ways. Ex-bassist Matthews believed that Winning Days was a step in a different direction for the band. Upon the release of their debut album, the Vines were hailed as "the second coming of Nirvana" by the British press; their grungy sound was considered reminiscent of the Seattle scene circa and Nicholls' erratic on-stage behaviour and raw vocals drew comparisons between him and Kurt Cobain.

Critical reactions to 's Winning Days were mixed. Pitchfork 's Chris Ott described it as being "nothing more than boring and harmlessly vapid" and showing "only mild promise". Schnapf's production is somewhat augmented by Craig Nicholls, singer, guitarist and lead songwriter, whose mushmouthed vocals at least stray from sterility. Problem is, his unintelligible croon doesn't really work with the more sentimental tracks which account for at least half the songs here , and even when the music ascends to garage-style rock, his only communicable emotion is the time-honored bratty sneer.

Still, Nicholls is a natural talent as a writer. He already knows from killer hooks-- "Highly Evolved" and "Outtathaway! And the mini-epic "," though sprawling and indulgent, is genuinely refreshing after squeaky-clean hard rock like "In the Jungle" and the obnoxiously beach-ready "Sunshinin'": its tortured mess of an outro drags on long enough that, for once, the two guitarists actually find room to breathe. Highly Evolved also slows down for some endearing pop, like the peppy, syncopated "Factory.

The Vines get credit for ambition, but Highly Evolved covers so much ground that none of it seems convincing: there's just no emotional depth here. 2. Highly Evolved is a terrific debut album and remains the only album from them that has garnered considerable acclaim (which I find shocking as Winning Days and Vision Valley are classics too). You have punky tracks like 'Outthaway' and 'Get Free' along with more trippy psychedelic ones like 'Homesick' and 'Factory'/5().
  3. But instead of just capitalizing on that one (admittedly great) sound, on the rest of the album the Vines prove that their style is indeed a highly evolved hybrid of grungy, garage rock swagger, '60s psych, and '70s pop. "Sunshinin'" throws a Krautrock-tinged bassline into the mix for good measure, while the irresistible "Factory" sounds like Elton John and Supergrass collaborating on a response to "Ob-La 8/
